From Connaught Bonsai to Irish Bonsai Association
Growing Bonsai. Connecting Ireland.
Bringing together bonsai enthusiasts from across Ireland
Our Story
What began as a small initiative to bring bonsai enthusiasts together in the West of Ireland gradually grew into something with a wider purpose.
Connaught Bonsai was created around a simple idea: to provide a welcoming place where people could learn about bonsai, share their experiences and develop their skills together. From the beginning, the focus was on practical learning, friendship and a shared appreciation for the art of bonsai.
As the years passed, that idea continued to grow.
Through regular meetings, workshops, exhibitions and the sharing of knowledge, connections began to extend beyond the original local community. Bonsai enthusiasts from different parts of Ireland came together through events, exhibitions and a shared passion for growing and developing trees.
An Idea with a Longer History
The idea of creating a broader, Ireland-wide initiative to connect bonsai enthusiasts was not entirely new. Similar ambitions had been discussed in the past, reflecting a long-standing recognition that there was potential for greater connection across the Irish bonsai community.
While those earlier ideas did not develop into a lasting nationwide initiative, the need for connection and shared opportunities remained.
For Connaught Bonsai, the natural next step was to focus on building and strengthening a community in the West of Ireland. Over time, regular meetings, workshops and exhibitions created a strong foundation of experience and demonstrated what could be achieved when enthusiasts came together around a shared passion.
As that experience grew, so did the possibilities.
Events organised by bonsai enthusiasts in the West of Ireland began attracting people from beyond the region, creating opportunities to share the art of bonsai with an increasingly wider audience.
One of the most significant examples is The Art of Living Nature, the main summer bonsai exhibition developed under the Connaught Bonsai initiative. Presented as part of one of Ireland's major gardening events, the exhibition reaches several thousand visitors and has helped demonstrate the enormous potential for bonsai to engage, inspire and connect people on a much larger scale.
This experience revealed something important: the foundations already existed to help create something broader.
The knowledge, organisational experience, friendships and enthusiasm developed through years of activity in the West of Ireland could become the starting point for a wider initiative — one designed not to replace existing groups, but to create new opportunities for connection across Ireland.
That realisation became one of the natural foundations for the Irish Bonsai Association.
A Natural Next Step
It became clear that there was an opportunity to build something broader — not to replace the existing bonsai community, but to create a platform that could help connect people, share knowledge and celebrate bonsai across Ireland.
The Irish Bonsai Association was never intended to replace existing groups or communities. Instead, it was created to complement the wider bonsai landscape in Ireland — creating additional opportunities for people to connect, share knowledge, discover events and celebrate the art of bonsai.
IBA is built around the belief that bonsai grows stronger when knowledge, experience and inspiration can be shared. It is intended as an open space for enthusiasts at every stage of their journey, while respecting the individuality and independence of the many groups and communities that contribute to bonsai across Ireland.
We believe that the future of bonsai in Ireland lies in creating more opportunities for people to connect, learn, share knowledge and inspire one another.
That idea led to the creation of the Irish Bonsai Association (IBA).
IBA builds upon the experience, friendships and passion that helped Connaught Bonsai grow, while looking towards a wider future. Its purpose is to create opportunities for people to connect through bonsai, learn from one another and share the stories, knowledge and creativity that make this art form so special.
Rooted in a centuries-old tradition with deep cultural connections to Japan, bonsai represents far more than the cultivation of miniature trees. It brings together art, horticulture, patience, observation and a deeper appreciation of nature.
Today, Irish Bonsai Association continues that journey by supporting bonsai through meetings, workshops, exhibitions, education and the documentation of trees and their stories.
Our main summer exhibition, The Art of Living Nature, remains an important part of that journey. Reaching several thousand visitors as part of one of Ireland's major gardening events, it demonstrates the potential of bonsai to reach beyond the existing enthusiast community and inspire a much wider audience.
Alongside exhibitions, workshops, meetings and other activities throughout the year, IBA aims to create opportunities for people to discover, experience and share bonsai.
Whether you are discovering bonsai for the first time or have spent decades developing trees, there is always something more to learn, share and explore.
Irish Bonsai Association is the next chapter in that journey — built on experience, inspired by possibility and open to everyone who shares a passion for bonsai.
