Irish Bonsai Association – Growing Bonsai. Connecting Ireland.
Updated: Sep 9

From Connaught Bonsai to Irish Bonsai Association
What began as a small initiative to bring bonsai enthusiasts together in the West of Ireland gradually grew into something with a wider purpose.
Connaught Bonsai was created around a simple idea: to provide a welcoming place where people could learn about bonsai, share their experiences and develop their skills together. From the beginning, the focus was on practical learning, friendship and a shared appreciation for the art of bonsai.
As the years passed, that idea continued to grow.
Through regular meetings, workshops, exhibitions and the sharing of knowledge, connections began to extend beyond the original local community. Bonsai enthusiasts from different parts of Ireland came together through events, exhibitions and a shared passion for growing and developing trees.
At the same time, the role of bonsai itself was becoming increasingly important beyond regular meetings. Exhibitions created opportunities to introduce the art of bonsai to thousands of visitors, workshops encouraged people to learn and develop new skills, and the stories of individual trees began to be documented and shared.
It became clear that there was an opportunity to build something broader — not to replace the existing bonsai community, but to create a platform that could help connect people, share knowledge and celebrate bonsai across Ireland.
That idea led to the creation of the Irish Bonsai Association (IBA).
IBA builds upon the experience, friendships and passion that helped Connaught Bonsai grow, while looking towards a wider future. Its purpose is to create opportunities for people to connect through bonsai, learn from one another and share the stories, knowledge and creativity that make this art form so special.
Rooted in a centuries-old tradition with deep cultural connections to Japan, bonsai represents far more than the cultivation of miniature trees. It brings together art, horticulture, patience, observation and a deeper appreciation of nature.
Today, Irish Bonsai Association continues that journey by supporting bonsai through meetings, workshops, exhibitions, education and the documentation of trees and their stories.
Our main summer exhibition, The Art of Living Nature, welcomes several thousand visitors and provides an opportunity to share the beauty and cultural heritage of bonsai with a wider audience. Alongside other exhibitions and events throughout the year, it reflects our belief that bonsai should be accessible, inspiring and open to everyone.
Whether you are discovering bonsai for the first time or have spent decades developing trees, there is always something more to learn, share and explore.
Irish Bonsai Association is the next chapter in that journey.
