The Art of Living Nature – Bonsai Exhibition in Ireland
Ireland's Bonsai Exhibition at Claregalway Castle, County Galway
The Art of Bonsai.
A Celebration of Nature, Art and Creativity.
The Art of Living Nature is a unique bonsai exhibition celebrating the meeting of living art, nature and creativity, presented in the historic setting of Claregalway Castle in County Galway.
At the heart of the exhibition is the art of bonsai — a tradition with centuries of history and deep cultural connections to Japan. Through carefully cultivated trees, The Art of Living Nature explores the relationship between horticulture, artistic expression, patience, observation and our appreciation of the natural world.
One of the distinctive features of The Art of Living Nature is its collaboration with other artistic expressions inspired by nature.
In recent editions, the exhibition has been presented alongside the Claregalway Castle Botanical Art Expo. Selected botanical artworks have formed part of the visual setting of the bonsai exhibition, creating an interesting dialogue between living trees and artistic representations of nature.
Each exhibition brings its own artistic identity and perspective, while their collaboration creates an opportunity to bring these two approaches to nature together in a unique and inspiring way. The combination of living bonsai and botanical art creates a natural dialogue between art, nature and creativity, resulting in an exhibition experience that is both distinctive and memorable.
Bonsai and botanical art come from different traditions and disciplines, yet they share a common foundation: a fascination with nature, careful observation, patience and creativity.
This shared connection adds another dimension to The Art of Living Nature

Part of Galway Summer Festival
The Art of Living Nature takes place at Claregalway Castle as part of the Galway Summer Festival, a major horticultural and garden event in the west of Ireland.
The festival brings together horticulture, gardens, art and culture and attracts a large and diverse public audience.
This setting provides The Art of Living Nature with an opportunity to introduce bonsai to people who may never have encountered the art form before, while giving experienced enthusiasts the chance to share their trees and knowledge with a much wider audience.
A Celebration of Bonsai
At the centre of The Art of Living Nature are the trees themselves.
Every bonsai has its own character and history. Some may have been cultivated for decades, while others may represent a more recent artistic journey. Some are the result of years of careful development; others may be remarkable examples of collected or naturally formed material.
Together, they demonstrate that bonsai is far more than simply growing a small tree.
It is an art form combining horticulture, design, patience, observation, craftsmanship and an understanding of nature.

Open to Bonsai Enthusiasts Across Ireland

We want the exhibition to provide an opportunity for people to share their trees, knowledge and passion regardless of where they live or which bonsai club they belong to.

The Exhibition Opening
The public exhibition takes place over the weekend and is preceded by a special Friday evening opening reception for invited guests, exhibitors and partners.
The evening provides an opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts, enjoy refreshments and wine, hear short speeches and celebrate the opening of the exhibition before it welcomes the wider public.
It is intended to be a relaxed and welcoming beginning to the exhibition weekend, bringing together people connected by bonsai, art, horticulture and a shared appreciation of nature.

Every tree has a story.
Every artist sees nature differently.
The Art of Living Nature brings them together.
